Here is a question worth asking your marketing agency today. Do you have full admin access to your own ad account? If the answer is no, or if you are not sure, that is a problem. And the reasons an agency gives for keeping you out are usually the reasons you most need to see inside.
We work with home improvement businesses across the UK, and we have lost count of the number of roofers, window companies, and kitchen firms who came to us having never once logged into the ad account that was spending their money. That should not be normal. It is your budget, your leads, and your business. You should own the account it all runs through.
Why This Is a Red Flag, Not a Technicality
When an agency controls the ad account and refuses to hand over access, they control the one thing you need to hold them accountable. You cannot see what you are actually spending. You cannot see which campaigns work and which quietly burn money. You cannot see the real cost per lead, only the version presented to you in a monthly report.
An agency that is confident in its work has no reason to hide the account. The ones who guard access most tightly are usually the ones with the most to hide.
What They Are Usually Hiding
Sometimes it is spend. The reported budget and the actual budget do not match, and the gap is quietly kept.
Sometimes it is performance. The results look far less impressive inside the account than they do in a polished slide deck.
And sometimes it is ownership itself. If the account is in the agency's name rather than yours, then every bit of data, every optimisation, and every audience you have paid to build walks out the door the day you leave. You are renting something you should own.
The Ownership Rule That Protects You
The account should be created under your business, in a Meta Business Portfolio or Google Ad Account you own. The agency is simply added as a partner with access to run it. When the relationship ends, you remove their access and keep everything. The history, the data, the learnings, the tracking. All of it stays with you, because it was always yours.
This one distinction, whether the account belongs to you or to them, decides whether you are building an asset or handing one away every month.
What To Do About It
If you already work with an agency, ask them directly for admin access to the ad account and confirm whose name the ad accounts are in. A straight answer and quick access is a good sign. Hesitation, excuses, or a flat no tells you everything you need to know.
If you are choosing an agency, make account ownership a condition before you sign anything. It is a simple ask, and any agency worth working with will say yes without blinking.
We build every account under the client, every time. You own it, you can see it, and you keep it. That is not a favour, it is just how it should be.
