OpenAI has confirmed a change to how daily budgets work on ChatGPT Ads. Previously, your daily budget was the maximum your campaign could spend in a single day. Going forward, it becomes an average daily amount spent across a rolling seven-day period.

If you already run paid media on Meta or Google, this will sound familiar, because it is the same model those platforms have used for years.

What Is Actually Changing

Your daily budget used to be a firm ceiling. Now it is an average. On a day where the platform sees a stronger opportunity to deliver results, your campaign can spend more. On quieter days it spends less. Over the week it balances out to the number you set. Nothing about the amount you have already budgeted changes, and existing campaigns update automatically. There is no action required on your part.

The Two Limits Worth Remembering

There are clear guardrails. On any single day, your campaign can spend up to twice your daily budget. Across the full seven-day period, it will not spend more than seven times your daily budget. So if you set £100 a day, a single day might reach £200, but the week will never exceed £700. Actual spend is often lower, depending on how much genuine delivery opportunity exists.

What This Means for Your Billing

You may be billed different amounts on different days. If your campaign delivers £110 of advertising on a given day, that is what you are billed for that day. Other days may come in higher or lower. What stays fixed is the seven-day total, which remains inside the limits above.

The Daily budget label still appears in Ads Manager, now alongside updated detail on your maximum daily and seven-day spend.

Why This Is Good News, Not a Reason to Worry

The instinct when a platform touches your budget is to assume it will cost you more. This does the opposite of that. Averaged budgets let the platform put your money where the results are, rather than forcing it to hold back on a strong day just because a rigid daily cap has been hit.

For home improvement businesses running lead campaigns, where demand can spike around weekends, weather, and seasonal buying windows, that flexibility usually means better use of the same spend, not more of it.
