78% of customers buy from the first business that responds to their enquiry.

Sit with that for a second. Nearly eight out of ten jobs go to whoever replies first. Not the business with the best reviews, the sharpest price, or the longest track record. The first one to answer.

We have written before about why speed to lead matters and the systems that support it. This post is about something more specific: the difference between responding quickly and responding first. Because in a market where homeowners enquire with three or four companies at once, quick is not enough. First wins.

Being good at your job does not make you first

Here is the frustrating part for most home improvement businesses. The things that make you brilliant at what you do are the exact things that stop you responding first.

You are on site. You are up a ladder. Your office is busy sending out other quotes and on the phone with existing customers. Meanwhile, somewhere out there, a competitor with a quieter diary picks up the phone first and takes the job you were better qualified to do.

That is the trap. The busier and better you are, the more leads you lose to whoever happens to be sat at a desk.

The enquiries you never see land after 6pm

Now add the timing problem. Homeowners do not always research their new kitchen or driveway during working hours. They do it in the evening, once the kids are in bed. They do it on Sunday mornings with a coffee. They do it on bank holidays when they are staring at the garden thinking it needs sorting.

Over 50% of home improvement enquiries land outside office hours, precisely when nobody at your business is going to respond. If your first reply goes out at 8.30 the next morning, you are not in a race any more. The race finished last night, and someone else won it.

No rota, reminder, or good intention fixes this. You cannot staff 11pm on a Saturday. You need something that never goes home.

How Closo makes our clients first, every time

This is exactly the job Closo does.

Closo is our lead response system, and it works around the clock. The second an enquiry arrives, whether from an ad, a website form, or a missed call, Closo responds instantly by text and email. The homeowner hears back within seconds, while they are still on the sofa with their phone in hand and their interest at its peak.

For our clients, that 78% statistic is no longer a threat but an advantage. While their competitors are only just opening emails over breakfast, Closo has already responded and engaged the lead, keeping them warm ahead of that first human touchpoint.

First is a position you can own

Most businesses in your area are slow to respond. That is not an insult, it is an opportunity. It means being first is genuinely up for grabs, and the business that takes it wins a share of jobs completely out of proportion to its size or ad spend.

You do not have to be the biggest name in your market. You just have to be the first one the homeowner hears from. Every time. At any hour.
